Helpful Tips

Using Velum:

Because the Velum is pricey, cut only the size you need for your project so there is no waste.

When using the Velum for the colored pencils be aware that very seldom you might find the paper too smooth to take the colored pencil.  If you find a spot that is too smooth take a small piece of sanding paper and sand that spot. It will fix the problem. I have seen this happen to my students on just a couple occasions, but using the velum paper is so worthwhile as your colored pencil project will look and feel so different than using regular paper.

When you are done with your project, remove the velum from your original drawing.  Lay the finished velum piece on top of a white piece of paper.  You will be amazed at the glow of the project.  Frame it with the white paper beneath the velum.

Choosing a Colored Pencil brand:

Colored pencils really do vary in the quality. I would stick to Prismacolor colored pencils. All other colored pencils are harder to use and the color is not as vibrant.

Planning for future projects:

When designing your own projects for colored pencil, I would encourage you to not make them larger than 6 X 9 inches. This way the project will not take as long.

Avoiding the appearance of scribbling in your project:

It is very important not to get sloppy and let your lines show like scribbling marks. As you use your colored pencils, use small ovals to fill in the colors as ovals are soft and you will not see the texture created by up and down lines.
