Helpful Tips

Hit the PAUSE BUTTON often!

Sharon doesn’t expect you to keep up with her pace. As a professional artist and teacher she is moving along at nice clip in order for you not to have to spend a lot of time listening to her. Instead of trying to keep up with her, Sharon wants you to spend your time completing your project. So, listen to a small part (maybe only a minute), push pause and then work that section. It is very important for you to slowly and carefully complete the project. These projects are not meant to be completed in one setting except for the Beginner Level. A student should never complete more than one lesson in a day.

Use the Lesson Highlights section below to check your work.

Look at the Lesson Highlight section after every video where you work on your project. These pictures show where you should be at the end of the corresponding video. Click on each photo to enlarge the picture as you check your work. If adjustments need to be made to your project, do it before proceeding to the next video.

Other Helpful Tips

This project is more likley to be a masterpiece if you take your time. The more careful you are, the better your project will be!

Choosing a wood burner:

It is very important to use a good wood burner for this project. A cheap pencil wood burner will not easily give you a masterpiece. They are hard to hold even for adults. If you invest in a good wood burner, I believe that you will use it again and again for more projects. Otherwise, with the pencil shaped wood burners, you will get discouraged and think wood burning is not for you. I have had many students work with my recommended wood burners and after doing one project go and buy their very own. I believe that your child will absolutely love this media.

As you work:

Always test how dark the wood burner will burn on your piece of wood after changing the temperature settings. To do this use a small scrap made of the same wood that you are using in your project. It may seem unnecessary after a while, but always checking will ensure you don’t overly burn a section of your project by accident.

It is usually best to work on the dark areas first and then go to the middle values and then to the lights.
